What to do in an emergency

For an incident requiring the emergency services (e.g. fire, serious injury)

The emergency number for calling the Fire Brigade, Ambulance or Police is: 1 1 2

When calling you will need to provide the following information:

 
  • Your name
  • Where you are calling from
    The address is: Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, Ny Munkegade 120 and specifically:
    • ASTRID2: Building 1526, Basement (floor 1), room number as indicated on the overview image.
    • Planetary Environment Facility: Building 1522, Basement (floor 0), room number 016
  • What has happened
  • The phone number you are calling from

Someone should meet the emergency services at the entrance to the building to be able to direct them to the location of the incident.

After the emergency services have been called, you should also have your local contact (a university employee) call Aarhus University's emergency phone number: 8715 1617

It is staffed 24/7 and they will activate the AU internal alarm procedure as required for the incident.

ALWAYS CALL 1 1 2 first

Outside working hours

  • In case of fire, also contact your local contact. Aarhus University's operations Inspector Ove Fjordside, +45 2899 2013 should also be informed.

For other incidents

Outside working hours

  • Water damage - Power failure: Contact Operations Inspector Ove Fjordside, +45 2899 2013 and try to call one of the local contacts.
  • In case of technical problems you can try and call one of the operators, beamline scientists or a local contact.

During working hours

  • Inform your local contact.

Personal injury

Major Injury

If someone sustains a major injury requiring immediate transport with an ambulance to an emergency ward, you, or someone with you, should administer first aid and then follow the procedure for calling the emergency services.

In case of a heart attack

There are two defibrillators in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, they are located:

On the wall by the main entrance to building 1520, floor 1, to the right as you exit one of the main lifts for the department On the wall by the sink on the west side of ASTRID2 in building 1526, close to the toilets. This is indicated on the ASTRID2 overview figure.

The defibrillators come with instructions for how to use them and will guide you through the use of them with verbal commands.


First aid kits

First aid kits can be found next to or near the two defibrillators. There is one on the wall next to the defibrillator in the ASTRID2 area, while there is a first aid kit in the mail room (118) to the left when you are looking at the defibrillator in the main entrance (on the left of the photo above-left). There are also kits at the following locations in the Department of Physics and Astronomy:

  • Building 1522, office 312. Heidi Pedersen's office
    (3rd floor of the building to the left after leaving the main lifts for the department)
  • Building 1523, room 210. The operating workshop
    (2nd floor of a building to the right after leaving the main lifts for the department)
  • Building 1523, room 110. The mechanical workshop
    (1st floor of the same building for the operating workshop

There are eye wash stations and a shower in the ASTRID2 facility area, which are noted on the overview figure for the facility.

There is an eye wash station at the Planetary Environment Facility.


Minor injury

If someone sustains an injury that requires medical attention, but not severe enough to call an ambulance, after administering first aid, follow the procedure below for arranging a consultation with a doctor. Your local contact should be informed and will be able to assist you.

For those who are NOT a resident of Denmark

  • Call the emergency doctor service: +45 70 11 31 31

Always call the emergency doctor service before you go to the emergency ward (see below). They will not admit you otherwise.

If you are a resident of Denmark

  • between 08:00 and 16:00 you should contact your personal doctor who will either arrange a consultation or tell you how to proceed.
  • Outside of these hours, call the emergency doctor service (Lægevagten) 70 11 31 31 before going to the emergency ward.

Emergency ward (casualty)

There is a 24-hour emergency ward at:

Aarhus Universitetshospital, Skejby 
Palle Juul-Jensens Boulevard 161, Indgang J3
8200 Aarhus N

There are direct trams (Letbane) and buses (2A) from the university to the hospital which operate between ~05:00 and ~00:00. Outside of these times you will need to arrange a taxi (+45 8948 4848).

There are a large number of pharmacies (Apotek) in Aarhus, with the following one in the centre of the city open between 06:00 and 00:00 every day:
