ISA meeting

Week 33, August 14, 2001.

Status of the ring: The ring has been running well most of the time last week. Last Friday morning, our kicker broke down. The problem was a faulty thyratron. We managed to borrow one in Copenhagen, which was mounted Saturday morning, such that there was beam during the weekend. Yesterday, we received a new one, which was installed yesterday.
There have been some problems with beam stability. Especially the SGM2 and the UV1 monochromators seem to be sensitive to this. This morning we have tried to switch off our vertical frequency tracking, and this apparently solves the problem, at least for the SGM2. We can run without it since we still track the tunes, and thus have no need of varying the frequency. There are still minor instabilities in one of the quadrupole supplies. This is being looked at, and will hopefully soon be solved.

ELISA has been tested with the electron target, and some unexpected features were observed: The system can be run in either a trap mode or a beam mode. In both cases, the electron density is estimated to be the same, but in beam mode, the ion beam is killed for some, still unknown reason.
Next week, ELISA will run photodissociation of a flourescent protein molecule.

Newsletter 8 has been sent out to everyone on our mailing list. It is important to keep this list updated, so if you have people you send it to, please have their names added to the list, which is kept by Kate, and have the outdated entries removed.
