ISA meeting

Week 36, Sept. 2, 1997.

Status of the ring: In the past week, we have had fairly stable conditions. Accelerated beam currents are in the 120-160 mA range. During our tests yesterday morning, we had 185 mA of injected current, but so far we are unable to achieve that level routinely.

Lifetime of the beam is still below out normal level. Typically, we have a lifetime of 6-8 hours. If requested by the users, we will make three injections/day to compensate for this.

The SX-700 monochromator will start operating again at the end of this week, according to SVH. The bakeout was stopped yesterday morning, and the pressure is now in the low 10-9 range.

The SGM monochromator has been aligned, and the SCIENTA has been running well, but it has developed some problems with the motors. The problems seems to be with the control electronics.

The Undulator beamline is doing well. The transmission is lower than earlier, and the energy calibration is shifted slightly, but FF and HK are working on it, and expect the system to be operational soon.

The experimental equipment for the low-energy electron scattering experiment of David Field and Stuart Lunt, is coming from Daresbury on Friday, and after some cleaning, it will be mounted on the monochromator.

The last two weeks of beamtime will be used to test the post-focusing mirrors, which are ready to be mounted in a few weeks.

Plans for the next ion run will be made soon, and Jeff Hangst has asked users for their requests for beamtime. The requests should be put on the form JH has prepared, and given back before Thursday, September 4th. On Friday, September 5th, there will be a meeting to discuss the proposed schedule.

Changes/modifications to the ring were discussed at a meeting which was held last week. Among the major changes are plans to put in a larger window in the dipole chamber in corner 1, and at the same time weld some synchrotron radiation beamports on the chamber.

The X-Ray microscope is running very well, RM reports. Next week, the modifications necessary for taking images in phase contrast will be made.
