ISA - Beam Usage User Manual
BeamUsage versions
Introduction:
Due to economical and environmental reasons nobody should use more energy
than necessary. Since ASTRID uses an electrical power of more than 330 kW in SR-mode, it is important
to turn the SR-light off when it is not used. (The power usage of the ring
in SR-mode is about the same as that of 3000 computers or 8000 light bulbs.)
Therefore a computer system to keep track of which, if any, beam lines are using the beam has
been developed. The BeamUsage program is the user interface to this
system.
How to use the BeamUsage program:
The BeamUsage program interface is divided into 4 sections. At the top (normally not changeable) is shown the name of the beamline for which the beam usage parameters are shown and can be changed.
Beam usage status: The first line shows the beam usage status. The possible messages are: No connection: The ISA control system (ConSys) is not running correctly.
Please see an ISA ConSys programmer (ask a beamline scientist or an operator) # active: Shows the number of beamlines which are active. Active state: The possible states for a beamline is: Inactive: The beamline has finished using the beam for the day
and ACCEPT THAT THE BEAM MAY BE DUMPED. When the last beamline has clicked
inactive, the dump sequence is initiated, and a countdown to dump is started.
The countdown period is 1200 s (20 min). During the countdown period the dump can
be cancelled by setting any of the beamlines active. |

Active: The beamline is active (i.e. using the beam).
NOTE that it is necessary to set the beam line active, if the beam
will be used later that day. The
system automatically keeps the beam for some time to give the users a chance to
go active. At present the beam is kept until 16:00 or at least 2 hours after a
fill.
IF NO BEAMLINE GOES ACTIVE WITHIN THE AUTOKEEP TIME, THE BEAM WILL BE DUMPED!!.
Note that many of the beamlines are controlling the BeamUsage parameter from
with the scanning program, see the beamline scientist for details.
Active - set inactive from: If a beamline has an experiment
running which will finish "by itself", the 'Active - set inactive from' option
can be used to automatically go 'Inactive' at a specified time.
The option can also be used in the case where all the users leave the beamline
(for instance for dinner) and it is uncertain whether or not, the group will
return. The 'Active - set inactive from' option can then be used to deactivate
the beamline, at the latest time of possible return.
Note that the 'Active' option is automatically selected whenever the date or
time is changed. This is to avoid accidental auto selection of 'Inactive' when
passing current time. Also when selecting 'Active - set inactive from', checks
are performed to insure that the specified time is not in the past and and not
more than 2 days in the future.
All beamlines are automatically set 'Inactive' during injections.
Beam wishes: The beamline users can here indicate their wish for an injection (a new fill) for tomorrow, for Saturday, and for Sunday. The inputs will be used to determine the need for injections.
Help: Will bring this page up on the computer.
User information: Will open a new dialog window where the users optionally can enter details regarding their group (Group name and/or the names of the persons in the group), the Title of their experiment, and a Comment. |

Start options:
The command line start option for the BeamUsage program is
BeamUsage [/beamline] [/FIXED]
where beamline can any of the below listed. When a valid beamline is
specified the program has this selected as default. If the /FIXED option is
present the beamline selection cannot be changed (intended for normal beamline
usage).
Valid beamline posibilities are:
"1" | "SGM1" | The SGM1 beamline |
"2" | "SX700" | The SX700 beamline |
"3" | "XRM" | The XRM beamline |
"4" | "TEST" | The TEST beamline |
"5" | "SGM2" | The SGM2 beamline |
"6" | "MIYAKE" | The MIYAKE beamline |
"7" | "SGM3" | The SGM3 beamline |
"8" | "UV1" | The UV1 beamline |
"9" | "CONTROLROOM" | The Control Room (a machine physics "user") |
"10" | "EXTR" | Extraction |
"11" | "CD1" | The CD1 Beamline |
Small letters can also be used (but then small letters for the whole word).
Additional notes:
The beam will also be dumped if in Machine Physics.
